As Project Lead, Jaeyoung Myung coordinates the overall design process for a new landscape lighting system in Tongyeong’s old downtown, from site research and environmental analysis to design direction, concept development, visualization, and prototype planning. The project focuses on developing pedestrian lights that can be attached to existing streetlight poles, creating a practical and scalable lighting system for the city.
A central goal is to approach lighting not simply as an aesthetic object, but as an element that interacts with people, the urban landscape, and the surrounding environment. The design prioritizes pedestrian safety and visual comfort while considering residential areas, vegetation, coastal views, and existing streetscapes. In particular, lighting intensity, direction, and placement are carefully considered to minimize glare and light pollution in areas close to homes and sensitive surroundings.
The project also explores how lighting can strengthen Tongyeong’s identity without relying on literal or decorative symbols. Local landscapes and cultural resources—including the sea, islands, waves, traditional crafts, and architectural heritage—are simplified and reinterpreted into contemporary forms, materials, colors, and patterns for a distinctive yet restrained lighting language.
Through this process, Jaeyoung Myung aims to balance human experience, aesthetic quality, and environmental responsibility. The resulting approach treats light as part of a broader urban ecosystem—providing safer and more comfortable pedestrian environments while reducing unnecessary environmental impact and creating a coherent nighttime identity for Tongyeong.
