Located along the 123-meter boundary wall of Jayu Kindergarten, this project transformed an aging streetscape in Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village into a more playful and interactive environment for children, families, residents, and visitors. The project used an award-winning children’s story as its core content, connecting the kindergarten environment with the identity of the surrounding Fairy Tale Village.
A key design approach was to move beyond a conventional mural and create a playful storytelling experience that children could discover and engage with as they moved through the street. Story characters, colors, three-dimensional elements, photo spots, and storytelling signs were distributed throughout the space, turning the long retaining wall into a sequence of visual and spatial experiences. The project explicitly emphasized participatory and experiential content rather than passive viewing.
The site’s direct relationship with Jayu Kindergarten was particularly important to the design. Safety and children’s behavior were considered alongside playful elements; stakeholder discussions specifically addressed potential injury risks around the kindergarten entrance, opportunities for participatory art, and storytelling signage that could help children understand the narrative.
Jaeyoung Myung contributed to site analysis, spatial and playful experience design, detailed design, and visualization, translating the storytelling concept into buildable spatial elements. He participated in the project’s development from site analysis and section-specific design through detailed design, public design review, construction planning, installation, and maintenance planning.
